A substrate that perfectly replicates the natural habitat of many animal species!
Stone Desert substrate is a blend of naturally occurring ingredients. The arid desert or savanna regions are characterized by dry, hard soil usually consisting of sand, gravel and clay, and stones of various sizes. This soil composition creates an extremely interesting, multi-colored environment.
Exo-Terra‘s substrate components allow the construction of permanent structures, such as cool, moist burrows or high hills for basking. Underground burrows are characterized by reduced temperature and increased humidity, which allows the animals to properly moisten their skin (especially important during the moulting process). Such places provide the perfect shelter for rest and sleep. In turn, the construction of an irregular landscape with many hills creates an appropriate temperature gradient inside the terrarium, allowing the animals to properly thermoregulate.
Exo-Terra Stone Desert substrate preparation:
The substrate should be well moistened before placing in the terrarium. To do this, place a portion of the substrate in a large enough container. Thoroughly mix the substrate while sprinkling with water until the desired viscosity is achieved. You can pour this prepared substrate into the terrarium.
Construction of burrows, hills, walls:
A properly prepared substrate can be formed into a compact structure by tamping. Building burrows can be made easier with a plastic bottle that you can drape over the ground. Once the substrate has dried, simply pull out the bottle and the burrow is ready. All sorts of hills and bumps just need to be made up of more soil, which should be compacted with the palm of your hand from time to time. In small tanks, the substrate can be used to build walls. The substrate must be very moist and the surface of the wall must be matted – or you can glue various items to act as anchors for the wall. Place the tank on its “back“, pour in the appropriate amount of substrate and beat it firmly with your hand or fist. Allow the tank to dry. After a few days the wall should be ready to use!
